Fundraising for Cavell Nurses Trust

Hi – first blog here – gulp!

It’s a bit nerve wracking isn’t it, writing a blog.

That type of thing should be left to important people, who have things to say and know how to spell.

I’m a nurse, which sort of does make me an important person (I'm essential said in the Tik Tok voice).

So, I find myself here - somehow writing a blog - because I feel I have something important to say and shine a light on.

Shine a light – that’s going to be a key theme! #carrythelamp

This is 2020, ‘The year of the nurse and midwife’, Florence Nightingale’s bicentenary.  All of that is pretty mega and we should be celebrating but … you know … Covid 19 and all that.

Therefore nurses right now need supporting as much as celebrating.

This year nursing and midwifery professionals have had to face an unprecedented global pandemic and work harder than ever before.  Imagine working long days in PPE, helping others, yet being in your own crisis, desperately needing emotional and financial support.  Who will help?

Well, that brings me to my friends at Cavell Nurses Trust.  These lot of lovelies support nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants (working and retired) who are facing crisis in their personal life, like a serious illness, hardship, disability or the impact of coronavirus.  They have given out 3 times as much in grant funding in May than they did in February due to the increase in demand for help.

Cavell Nurses Trust can help with things like money to fix a broken boiler, to supporting a family who suffered domestic abuse and have had to leave their home.  Getting people back on their feet increases their emotional strength and ability to remain in a profession they love.  The Welfare Services Team can offer emotional support, advice on maximising benefits, signposting to specialist services and one-off grants.  These guys are pretty good eggs and if you are not already convinced - once they sent me cake in the post – how’s that for support!!

So, 2020 – 200 years since Florence Nightingale was born.  Flo, one of our most famous nurses, used to do ward rounds at night carrying a lamp.  They called her the lady with the lamp – shining her light to check on those in need.

That’s what we need to do right now, shine our light on nurses and midwives in need.

Join us raising vital funds for Cavell Nurses Trust at www.10kfornursesandmidwives.org

Throughout October there is a fundraising campaign - 10k your way!  Take on a 10K challenge, run, walk, cycle! The Cavell Nurses Trust have also organised a Snowdon challenge, so if you like fresh air and amazing views, check it out! Do it with pals, so it on your own, do it on a trampoline...but do it.  Florence would have been well up for 10K your way!!

You don’t have to be all outdoorsy or super fit; you can make a challenge for whatever you’re into.  Take on a challenge, raise some cash, help lots of people, you’ll get a free t-shirt and have some fun - what’s not to love!

Be the light in the dark for those in need.  Shine your light and carry the lamp for nurses and midwives.
